Warranty Software IT Advocate

We have all been there, so raise your hand. Your team has been tasked by the business to implement a 3 rd party warranty software application. IT, legal, and thebusiness users do their due diligence, you then sign a master services or software agreement along with a SOW for the fast track software implementation. The software provider assigns a dedicated project manager and you assign your internal project manager and the business provides their business users and SME’s. With all the team members hard work the warranty software application is implemented within time and budget. The business now supports the business functions in the warranty application, while IT supports that hosting of the warranty application which could be SAS, PAS, on premise, or your companies cloud hosting provider.

A year has now passed and the business users would like like to implement some new business processes and a new line of business on this application They define their new business requirements and discuss their project with their internal IT teams and software provider. In the minds the business users, the new business processes and new line of business look very simple to implement. Over a few conference calls with the software provider, the conclusion was what appears to be simple is not so simple to implement and will be costly with a lot of rework of the initial implementation.

How did we get here ? Well the blame is split 50 50. The software provider just implemented what the users wanted without asking the companies business plans for the future and just followed their standard fast track implementation project plan which has been successful for their other warranty clients. Fast track implementation plans are based on what I call standard boiler plate implementations. Most successful warranty companies today need to differentiate from their competitors, so boiler plate is not the best option. The business users were so focused on their existing implementation they failed to mention their future business plans and processes.
